Groundhog Day

Groundhog Day

February 2nd - 7am Thanks to Bill Murray and the "Groundhog Day" movie, every day is Groundhog Day in Woodstock! Beginning on Wednesday, February 1, 2023 with Welcoming of the Groundhog, followed by days of celebration, including the Official Prognostication and culminating on Sunday, February 5, 2023. Come to the beautiful Woodstock Square and help us celebrate the anniversary of this family-favorite cinematic classic! Each year, Woodstock celebrates the movie, which was filmed here in 1992, with a chili cook-off, breakfast, dances, special showings of the movie, and a tour of filming sites, leading up to, of course, Woodstock Willie's prognostication. Come to Woodstock and celebrate a movie that has become a favorite of young and old and the community that Woodstock has always been. We’ve had visitors from as far away as Australia, celebrities from the Groundhog Day movie and local media and everyone agrees that this festival is a great way to shake off the gloom of Winter, if just for a few days. Visit the Woodstock Groundhog Days webpage for more information, including a walking tour of the filming sites. We guarantee, you'll want to return every year and RELIVE the magic that Woodstock offers, just like the movie portrays!

Lighting of the Sqaure

Lighting of the Sqaure

Visit the beautiful and historic Square on the Friday after Thanksgiving and help the City of Woodstock usher in the official start to the holiday season. With the flip of a switch, tens of thousands of twinkling lights are illuminated on Park trees and Square buildings, ushering in the magic of Christmas in a Victorian-era setting. While the lighting ceremony begins at 7:00 p.m. in the Park-in-the-Square, there are many wonderful holiday activities planned from 4:00-8:00 p.m., including holiday carolers, children’s activities, charitable opportunities, shopping at downtown boutiques and dining at local restaurants. But, best of all, Santa make a grand entrance before the lighting ceremony to greet children and pose for cherished pictures. A special treat is the opening of the annual Opera House Christmas Tree Walk featuring dozens of trees beautifully decorated by area organizations. While you’re in Woodstock for the Lighting of the Square, stay for the weekend and enjoy our lovely town Square and brick-lined streets connecting upscale shops, fine dining and live entertainment as well as shopping districts on IL Route 47 and throughout the community. And, don’t forget the many holiday events and performances at the Woodstock Opera House and free carriage rides on selected days. If you love parades, be sure to join in welcoming Santa and Mrs. Claus as they escort the Christmas Parade around the Square on the Sunday after Thanksgiving. After the Parade, enjoy Cookies and Churros with Santa and tell him what you want for Christmas. Event Location: 121 West Van Buren Street Woodstock, Illinois 60098
